Obiano and Others at Aguleri Ovala festival 2016 – Photos.

Significance of the Ovala Festival.

The Ovala is purely a royal and kingly festival in Aguleri, its significance and impact has greatly changed. The Ovala festival of Eze Idigo of Aguleri remains the most significant and most colorful cultural and traditional royal fiesta in the entire South-East Nigeria. The Ovala Aguleri has assumed the status of a major ethnic royal festival comparable to the famous Igue royal festival in Benin and the O’dua royal festival in Ile-Ife among others. Its national social significance is also comparable to the popular Argungu fishing festival in Sokoto and the Lagos Eyo festival.

Significantly, the Ovala festival is the high point and the beginning of the royal year in Aguleri. It is the most popular and prestigious traditional festival in Aguleri celebrated by the Eze Idigo of Aguleri to among other things, commemorate his kingship and herald the dawn of a new year. It affords the Eze Aguleri an annual opportunity to commune with his people, other communities, individual and institutional stakeholders within and beyond Aguleri. It brings together men and women, old and young not only from Aguleri, but also most communities in the present Anambra-East, Anambra-West, Oyi and Ayamelum LGAs for a native week-long (four days) celebration. During the festival, the Eze Idigo offers prayers and thanksgiving to God for His benevolence and continued assistance both in the year gone by and in the new year. He interacts with and receives tributes and homage from his numerous subjects Aguleri

The average Aguleri person looks forward to the Ovala festival with high expectation, more than any other traditional or modern social festival. It means so many things to so many people and an opportunity to witness some annual but rare events. In specific terms, the Ovala affords an opportunity for Aguleri people to celebrate and herald the new year, go home and interact with their kith and kin, and once more integrate themselves into the socio-traditional life of the people. It was formerly celebrated on the first Eke market day of the year but due to modern demands the date has changed to the first Saturday of every year.

Anambra Students Call For Review Of State Scholarship/Bursary Board - Education - Oscarnaija

Anambra Students Call For Review Of State Scholarship/Bursary Board

Students of tertiary institutions of Anambra State origin have called on the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano to consider reviving the state’s scholarship and bursary board. The Students made the recommendation to the governor in a communiqué drawn after a stakeholders meeting, and issued to journalists, saying that it is shameful that scholarships are almost inexistent in the state any longer. They stated that the payment of bursary will help ameliorate the plight of students of the state who are in various tertiary institutions across the country, and have been experiencing hardship.

The students, speaking under the aegis of National Union of Anambra State Students(NUASS) which consists of over 15,000 registered students of tertiary institutions across the country insisted that Anambra is a pacesetter state, yet it falls under states that have not been paying bursary to its students. According to the national president of the association, Comrade John Paul Atuanya, the Anambra Scholarship and bursary board last operated decades back, but reviving it will help to provide accurate data of Anambra Students who are in tertiary institutions, and also help in fishing out students who have excelled in their studies for rewards and other forms of scholarship. The communiqué which was signed by the current president of NUASS, Atuanya, Immediate past president of the group, Comrade Israel Anozie and other officers, all of who traveled from various institutions across the country to attend the meeting commended the governor for his achievements in the state so far.

“We in NUASS want to acknowledge that the governor, Chief Willie Obiano has done a lot in the area of Education, and this can be seen in the excellent performances of students of the state in external examinations, and competitions where the state has been winning laurels. “We also applaud his achievements in the area of security. Unlike before, we have just witnessed one of the best Christmas celebration ever, devoid of armed robbery and kidnapping. And for the first time, our people were able to come home and spend Christmas without fear.” They wrote. They also drew the attention of the governor to the non existence of a functional secretariat of the union, which has also remained a hindrance to the galvanizing of its members, just as the union is now run on the bags of its executives.

Nnamdi Kalu's Lawyer chased out of court - The Cable - Politics - Oscarnaija

Squabbles over legal representation for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Monday, stalled his trial for alleged treason at the federal high court, Abuja. Vincent Obetta, Kanu’s lawyer, who has represented him since the beginning of his trial at a lower court, was not in court, but another lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who claimed that he had been hired to represent the IPOB leader, showed up.

A mild drama ensued as Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel asked Ejiofor to leave, impressing it on him that Obetta was the legitimate counsel of his brother. Ejiofor tarried a while, but left afterwards.

The case, however, did not come up, and Obetta told TheCable that the Kanu family was still trying to sort out issues regarding legal representation for Kanu, who has been in detention since October 14, 2015. On December 23, 2015, Kanu had refused to take his plea before Ahmed Mohammed, justice of the federal high court, Abuja, citing lack of confidence in the court.

This was after Adeniyi Ademola, another justice of the federal high court, Abuja, ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to release him unconditionally, and after a chief magistrate court discharged and acquitted of charges of criminal intimidation and ownership of unlawful society. Meanwhile, Obetta has refuted reports that Kanu is ill, and that he is being tortured in custody. According to him, Kanu is in high spirits and healthy.
