Dee Dee Records Debuts

A new record label, Dee Dee Records, is set to make a mark on the Nigerian music scene as it unveiled its Nigerian artistes last week in Lagos.
Damien Iwumene, CEO, Dee Dee Records, said the new label is poised to take Nigerian entertainment to the next level. “We have been making noise in the US and we are known for what we do. Now we want to take the gospel back home and empower our youths. We have three American artistes and two Nigerian artistes so Dee Dee Records is one big cross-Atlantic family of talented artistes,” Iwumene said.
The label boss added that the two new Nigerian acts to join the label are Saint Leo (the masked one) and Indo, while its American-based artistes include Ptyte, Moses Efret and Masq Satrazy.
He also disclosed that the label is currently concentrating on releasing the debut gospel album of Effret, who also doubles as actor. The album is slated for June. His single, Na My Time, is available on YouTube.
“Once we are through with Effret, we will push out St. Leo and Indo’s albums. They are currently in the studio recording,” he added.
Founded in 2010, Dee Dee  Records is an independent record label based in the US. The company plans to venture into movies in the nearest future to promote Nollywood home and abroad.

My family abandoned me–Yaw

By SAMUELOKEKE
There is arguably no bigger star on radio at the moment than Steve Onu popularly known as Yaw. But he has not always been like this. His beginning was so rough that he jokingly said his shadow would refuse to follow him when the trekking was unbearable. Today, Yaw is a celebrity raking in millions and making millions happy. In this interview with The Entertainer, the On-Air-Personality shed more light on his life journey. Excerpts:
What is this year’s show all about?
What I am doing is basically satire every year. It is about what is happening in government of Nigeria, from last year to date, that is the beauty of the whole thing. So everything that you saw happened throughout 2012 and a part of 2013 are what we are going to re-enact. We would be using humour to pass our message. It’s just for you to come there live and hope you pick something. And my own definition of humour is just like you are using a rubber bullet to shoot someone, you didn’t intend to spill blood, but whether you like it or not, you fired. So, if you come on that day you watch, laugh and go home, and don’t pick anything that is left for you.
You included Funke Akindele this year?
To start with, I wanted to have a female and secondly, I was looking for someone who is versatile, someone that’s got creativity. Because most of the things we are working with, even though scripted, are like a guide. And we are bringing everything that has happened like I said, in Nigeria, and we have to mimic some people. So, basically I just told myself, I have not seen Funke on stage doing drama, that is why I said let me have Funke this time around
Would you say you are lucky to have made it?
I wouldn’t say it is luck, I believe in hard work, and the favour of God. I don’t think there is anything like luck, I joined the industry in 1995. 1995 till date is nearly 17 years. If you went to primary school, you would have graduated into secondary and even be moving to the next level. 17 years of my life I have put into this. I started with Twilight Zone, but I started up with normal home videos. I joined the movie industry when Ifeanyi Dike was AGN President. And I think he was the first president, if they had any president before him I can’t really say. Emma Ogidan was the next; I was there when he was elected. Then I left the industry, why did I leave? They never believed I had the talent, but I knew I had it. Along the line, I met RMD who told me to go study Theatre Arts; that he believed I would make it as an artiste or as an actor; that was what he told me. I then went to LASU in 1995/1996. I did Diploma in Theatre Arts at LASU. Later, I got admission into University of Ibadan, but I couldn’t stay in UI, I wanted Lagos, it was that period I did Twilight Zone. Along the line, I started a stage play, Flatmates, doing story with the BBC, and also applied for WAZOBIA. So, I wouldn’t say it is luck, I just believe its the grace and favour of God, secondly, it is hard work.
So, you never received a single day lecture in UI?
No. I stayed back in Lagos till LASU started degree programme and then went back to LASU to do a degree course.
A lot of Lagosians knew you through Flatmates. Would you say that was a challenging period for you?
In life, I have never seen anything as a challenge. I just see opportunities.
You became popular with WAZOBIA FM morning show and it was surprising when you became head of all presenters. How did you shoot up?
Yes, it was just Marshal and I that started the radio station. The radio station started in November 27, 2007 and we joined December 1, 2007.
Who were the presenters before you started, and how did you get the job?
Nobody, there were people who just played music, but not talking, till we joined. I was doing content supply. I had told myself before then that I was not going to write any letter of application because RMD had said I would make it as an actor. So, I had that in my head. I was concentrating on acting when Bunmi Davies took me to see Abrahim Abubakar in Cool FM. The man told Bunmi that they wanted to open a Pidgin radio station, that Bunmi can supply them content. I told Bunmi I would love to work there. I was called for interview, before then I took my friend, Lanre Dele Abraham’s CV, I changed all the places he wrote his name, qualification, and submitted, leaving qualities and abilities. The day for interview came, I folded my shirt, wore a jeans and Timberland and went to look for job. I got to the reception, I saw other applicants dressed in suits and ties. I told myself ‘see people wey come find work, no be me’.
My turn came, I was asked one or two questions, and to also list out my qualities and abilities, I couldn’t, so I said ‘oga make I tell you the truth nor be me write am, na my friend’s CV I copy’. They said among themselves ‘this guy is mad and this is the kind of person we need in our radio station’. That was how I got the job.
When I resumed at the radio station, Dan (Forster) called me and said ‘you just have to be yourself on radio, don’t be fake’. Then I used to read news, but this day I wanted to read news and I didn’t know where I kept the script, then I began to say ‘where I kip dis paper’. I didn’t know that my microphone was on. As I discovered, I continued ‘na witch people be no want make I read news for una, but shame to bad people, I go read dis news today’. Later, my boss came and asked me if that was a mistake. I said yes, he said ‘believe me that was natural, and that is what Lagosians want’.
The next day people called in to say ‘thank God today say witch no steal your papers’. From then on, I started to do a lot of things, just to improve myself.
How did you get the MTN job while still working in WAZOBIA?
They just called me to come and do it. I think it is what you said that is working, trying to build your brand, you get to a level and every other thing then starts to fall into place. I think I have done something earlier on for GLO. I think they used that only in the east, because it was strictly Ibo, then the BBC, I still do stuff for BBC.
What was your first day on radio like?
First day on radio, as usual you will be scared, trying to mind things you say because there are certain things you shouldn’t say. I might not remember the feeling, but part of the new things I said are some of my early experiences. But it wasn’t easy too, because they give you your script in English and you have to read it in Pidgin. It wasn’t easy in the early stage but with time you adapt.
Were you vast in Pidgin before WAZOBIA?
Not at all. In my house, we used to speak Yoruba language, and I’m Ibo. At a point, we changed and we started speaking Ibo or English because my father was particular about it. But I think my ability to also do that is because it is in me. When I say it is in me I meant I also studied theatre, as a theatre artist you should be versatile and should be able to do almost everything, and with time it grew. This is the 5th year I have been doing it, we are bound to grow.
At what point did you look back and say thank God?
In my house, people felt I was a useless person but the moment I started acting and they saw me in my first movie, they liked it. Then I took pictures with some actors and took them home. When they saw them, they started believing. In my mind, I said ‘thank God’ that is it. When that became a regular thing for me, I started the Twilight Zone, I became constant, and they see me on TV every week. I told myself that the money would soon come, that is it. When I started doing Face 2 Face at the Muson Centre, dignitaries came to watch, that was another break for me. Then we started Flatmate, which became more popular than Twilight Zone, it was on STV. Everywhere I went, it was YAW, YAW! Then when I started doing the BBC stuff, I said ‘na so people come recognize me reach’, I said thank God. Every point in time, I always thank God. Me, wey dey trek looking for how to survive, you don trek the kind trek wey your shadow go tire to follow you?
When did you get that feeling that you can begin to do MC and stand-up comedy?
I think it first started from school, during my diploma days. When I told myself it is just best to start acting comic roles, I discovered that early I just keyed into it.
There was a time you were so close to Ali Baba?
Up till now, I am still close to him. I love his movement.
I heard you impregnated a girl, is it true?
People just say things; I don’t discuss female issues with the press. Anybody can go out and write anything.
When will you marry?
Once it is time people will know, I am involved.
Now that you are a celebrity, I know many women would want to have a piece of you?
So far on my phone I think I have ‘don’t pick’ numbers up to fifteen. For some, they come out directly to tell you what they want. For those who don’t, they are your friends, but keep them at arm’s length.
What is the big deal if they want something, can’t you give it to them?
No. That I got it freely does not mean I should give it back freely.
You said at a point your parents didn’t want to see you, how bad could it have been? What happened?
Yes, it was that bad. Because I told them I wanted to do theatre, and I had to leave the house.
But now you are in good relationship with them.
They are in good relationship with me.
How many of you in the family?
We are 10, and I’m number seven.
How many wives did your father have?
Just one. And we call her ‘Abada’, that’s her nickname.  I am from Awka in Anambra State, we don’t call people auntie or brother, we address them by their nicknames.
When you left home who did you stay with?
I stayed with an uncle at Iyana-Iba Estate. One day, he sent me packing saying, he couldn’t continue to feed me. Then I stayed with a friend in that same Iyana-Iba, I lived with him for nearly two years. And those two years of my life I was lucky. Because that period, I finished my diploma course, I was just going to LASU to act, present and so on. From there, I went to stay with someone else; I was always staying with people because I could not afford to pay rent.

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, Wednesday, threatened the former Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, with arrest and prosecution should she
fail to return vehicles belonging to the ministry in her possession within one week.

Also to return government vehicles or face similar treatment are a former Minister of State in the Ministry, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Engr Anthony Ozodinobi. The vehicles were said to have been attached to them while they held forte in the ministry.
The vehicles in question are four Toyota Hillux Double Cabin pick-up vans.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, who handed down the order after hearing the submission of the officials of the Ministry led by its Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Kehinde Ajoni, who appeared before the Committee over the queries raised against the Ministry by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, said all efforts to retrieve the vehicles from the former officials since 2010 had proved abortive.
The Committee therefore threatened that failure on the part of any of them to comply with the directive would lead to their being dragged before the court and charged for stealing of government properties in accordance with the law of the land.
"This is unacceptable, they should all return the vehicles in question within one week; failure of which they will be charged to court for stealing. The secretariat should write the three of them immediately to convey the decision of this Committee to them. The evidence before us showed that several letters had been written to them on the need for them to return the vehicles which they ignored," Olamilekan said.
Permanent Secretary, Ajoni, had told the Committee that the ministry had made spirited efforts to recover the vehicles but Akunyili only returned one out of the two in her possession, while Bilbis and Ozodinobi held on to the ones in their possession.
She disclosed that the vehicles in question were for the National Telephony Project and they belong to the Ministry. The vehicles were said to have been attached to the affected ex-officials and the auditors discovered that they were missing during auditor routine checks.

Kano Killings: Police, CAN Disagree On Casualty Figure

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and the Police Command in Kano, northwest Nigeria are in disagreement over the casualty figure of the killing of Christians at Sheka in Kombotso Local Government Area of the state. While reacting to Media reports that 13 people were killed during the massacre by gun men suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, Kano state Commissioner of Police, Musa Daura who confirmed the incident, however claimed that only eight people were slaughtered by the Islamic militants.
But reacting to CP Daura’s claim, CAN chairman in Kano, Bishop Ransom Bello insisted that 13 Christians were killed during the attack.
Brandishing a list of the victims, Bishop Bello challenged the Police authorities to provide the list of the eight people they claimed were killed for clarification and threatened to make his own list public if the argument persists.
“I insist the number of Christians who were shot dead in that raid were 13. We have the record, their names and places of birth, and may be tempted to publish them in full if the argument on this figure continues,” Bello stated.
However, CP Daura described media reports of 13 victims as, “misleading and unfounded,” even as he denied being contacted, “by any individual or group on the issue.
“I want to make it categorically clear to the Press and the public that on February 28  at about 2200 hours, a distress call was received at the Control Room that unknown gun men attacked and killed innocent people in Shekar Madaiki, a suburb of Kano.
“Based on that ugly incident, armed security men were deployed to the scene, and search was conducted around the vicinity of the attack,  the security agents discovered eight dead bodies, while a number of arrest were made; and we intend to make the outcome of the investigations public,” Daura stated.
P.M.NEWS recalls that 13 factory workers identified as Christians at Sheka, Sharada Phase 111 in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano, northwest Nigeria were murdered in cold blood in their compound because they refused to join the Muslim evening prayers.
P.M.NEWS also gathered that already, the national secretariat of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has opened up investigation into the dastardly killings.
An eyewitness account told our Correspondent that the killers presumed to be terrorists from the camp of the dreaded Islamic Boko Haram sect stormed a compound in Sheka at about 7 p.m.
“The occupants of that compound are mostly factory workers, and they are Christians. The gun men who came on taxi asked if they were not observing the evening Muslim prayers; and when they confirmed their victims were Christians, they started killing them sparing only the female and children.
“After the attack, I counted at least, 13 dead bodies murdered in gruesome manner. Security agencies later came and evacuated them, while the very few of them who survived the attack fled the area and vowed never to return,” said a resident of the area.
Bishop Ransom Bello, CAN chairman in Kano has been in a very bad mood, not only because of the killings but what he described as the non-challant attitude of Kano state government over the incident.
Bello who is also the General Overseer of Calvary Life Assembly said he has handed over the matter to CAN’s national leadership, adding that with what is happening, it has become obvious that Christians are no longer safe in Kano.
“Reports of the attack reaching us disclosed that on that fateful Saturday at about 7 p.m, Muslim faithful were conducting their prayer close to the affected compound occupied by Christian families, when two taxi cabs stopped in front of the compound and the occupants, who all concealed  their arms dashed into the complex and  demanded to know why the residents were not part of the 7 p.m. Muslim prayer.
“They responded by telling the visitors they were Christians and so could not be part of the Muslim gathering. At that point, they separated the men from their wives and children and shot them dead on the spot after ordering the women and children into their homes. The 13th victim, who hid in a dark alley in the compound, surrendered himself, following threats by the gunmen to visit the same fate on the women and children if any man was found shielded,” Bello recounted.
“We are pained over the silence of the relevant authorities in the state, including the government on such a high profile murder. Even though we believe it is the handiwork of extremists, who do not see the reason why the Muslim North should accommodate Christians. We are really worried that nobody from the government has deemed it right to consol the family of those that were killed,” Bello lamented.
He added that, “government should show more concern, like it has always done when Muslims are affected; I have not seen that in the case of Christians—that 13 Christians were killed in one straight attack and nothing is heard from the government reflects selective justice because we are aware of compensation paid to Muslim families in situations of this nature.”

Buhari calls for Jega’s sack, accuses INEC of deep corruption

Nigeria's former head of state Muhammadu Buhari, has called for the sack of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, and other top officials of the commission,
saying the electoral body, as presently constituted, cannot be trusted to deliver on credible elections.
Speaking in London at the 4th British-African Diaspora conference held at the British House of Parliament on the theme "Stable Democracy and Nigeria's Economy,", Mr. Buhari said sacking Mr. Jega and his lieutenants is a good starting point for fixing Nigeria's broken electoral system.
"All the present indications are that INEC as it is presently constituted would be unable to deliver any meaningful elections in 2015," the former head of state said. "INEC's top echelon is immersed deep in corruption and only wholesale changes at the top could begin to cure its malaise."
He said for future elections to be credible and hitch-free, government needs to do a clean sweep of the personnel at INEC, replacing them with Nigerians of unquestionable integrity.
"What is required is a group of independent minded people, patriotic, incorruptible but with the capacity to handle such a strenuous assignment of conducting elections in Nigeria. It is not difficult to find such people but whether the Government and the National Assembly have the inclination to do so I am not so sure." Mr. Buhari added.
He accused the Jega-led INEC of having developed "a very cozy relationship with Executive and Judicial arms of government that its impartiality is totally lost".
Mr. Buhari recalled that in the run-up to the last elections the electoral body "requested (and received with indecent haste) in excess of 80 billion naira (about £340m.) a hefty sum by any standards, so that it could conduct the elections including organizing bio-metric voters data specifically for the 2011 elections".
He said that but when opposition parties "challenged the patently dishonest figures it announced and subpoenaed the bio-metric data in court, INEC refused to divulge them on the laughable excuse of "National Security".
Mr. Buhari also spoke on a wide range of issues from state creation to zoning system, poverty and wealth creation as well as the 2015 general elections. He said the scourge of corruption is deeply rooted in the nation, which puts the fight against the menace beyond the capacity of any government.
Reiterating the view expressed in a recent interview by the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Ekpo Nta, that "there is no political will (by government) to fight corruption in Nigeria", the former Presidential flag bearer of the CPC underscored the need for cooperation by all Nigerians in the campaign to rid the country of corruption in all its ramifications.
"Until serious efforts are made to tackle corruption, which is beyond the capacity of the government, economic growth and stability will continue to elude us," he noted.
He, however, acknowledged Nigeria's capacity to emerge as an economically competitive nation if the wrongs of political and economic corruption are corrected, adding that "democracy" cannot function optimally without a certain level of economic attainment.
According to the CPC chieftain, there is no short cut to poverty eradication other than to get people to work and earn their living, pointing out that there was need to ensure that agriculture thrives throughout the country through the provision of adequate incentives, like fertiliser, pesticides and small-scale credits to farmers.
He identified agriculture as one area that would greatly boost the growth of Nigeria within five to seven years, adding that the massive drift from rural to urban centres would be greatly reduced if proper attention is given the sector by government and other stakeholders.
He said attention should also be paid to the revival of employment generating activities through the small and medium enterprises, notably in the textiles industry and other land and forest resources-based industries to absorb the huge urban labour, in the drive to tackle poverty, reduce crime and boost economic growth.
A former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nasir El-Rufai, who also spoke at the event, said Mr. Buhari was persuaded to return to active politics even though he had earlier said he would never contest for the presidency after losing in the 2003, and 2007 elections.
On age limit for presidential aspirants, Mr. El Rufai said he believed strongly that the issue was not about age, but about (Buhari's) "combination of the wisdom of the old, and dynamism of the young to move the nation forward."
The conference, organised by BEN TV, was launched last year as part of efforts to engage the Diaspora on developmental issues in Nigeria.

Benedict XVI: 10 things about the Pope's retirement

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation on Thursday - the first by a Pope for more than 600 years - is forcing the Vatican to consider some unusual questions. Here are 10 answers. 1. Name and title He will be
known as Pope emeritus, or Roman pontiff emeritus, the Vatican announced on Tuesday. He will also continue to be known by his papal title of Benedict XVI, rather than reverting to Joseph Ratzinger, and he will continue to be addressed as "Your Holiness" Benedict XVI - in the same way, for example, as US presidents continue to be referred to as "president" after leaving office. "Emeritus" is a Latin word meaning "retired", from the verb "emereri" - to earn one's discharge by service.

2. New home: Benedict XVI will leave the Vatican by helicopter before he resigns at 20:00 (19:00 GMT) on Thursday, but he will return in about three months to a new residence - a former convent known as Mater Ecclesiae - in the south-west corner of Vatican City. Reports suggest Vatican gardeners will continue to cultivate a 500 sq m organic fruit and vegetable garden there - the Pope is said to enjoy marmalade made from its oranges. Meanwhile - as Mater Ecclesiae is refurbished - he will stay in the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.
3. His clothing: The Pope emeritus will continue to wear papal white - rather than the black of an ordinary priest, or the red of a cardinal. However it will be a simple cassock, with none of the flamboyant hats and vestments he revived during his papacy (prompting the Wall Street Journal to ask "Does the Pope Wear Prada?") He will be giving up his trademark red shoes, wearing instead brown shoes handmade for him by Mexican craftsmen during a visit to the country last year.
4. His ring: The papal gold ring, known as the fisherman's ring, will be smashed with a specially designed silver hammer when the Pope leaves office. No change here from normal practice. "Objects strictly tied to the ministry of St Peter must be destroyed," the Vatican says. His personal seal will also be defaced.
5. His duties: Benedict XVI will have no further administrative or official duties. He will not participate in the conclave to elect his successor (nor will any cardinal over the age of 80), though, since he appointed 67 of the 115 men who will take part in the conclave, his influence will be felt. Senior Catholics have also been re-reading speeches made by Benedict XVI before of his retirement for any hints about the qualities he believes his successor will require.
6. Life in retirement: Announcing his resignation, the Pope said he would spend his time praying for the Church. His elder brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, has also said Benedict would be happy to advise his successor, if required. Writing and studying also seems likely to be on the agenda - Benedict had a library of 200,000 books installed in the papal apartments when he was elected in 2005. He also enjoys playing the piano and watching old black-and-white comedies - and he loves cats. At least one, Contessina, is known to live at Mater Ecclesiae.
7. Social media: Benedict XVI's Twitter accounts (@Pontifex and its eight different language versions) are expected to be terminated when he steps down. The Pope is expected to utter his final tweet along with his final general audience on Wednesday - saying goodbye to the 2.5 million followers he has gained since opening his account late last year. Whether he will take the papal iPad on the helicopter is an open question.
8. Golden parachute: Modest as Benedict XVI's retirement plans may be, as a bishop he will retain the Vatican's generous private healthcare policy and is likely to have recourse to the doctors who currently manage his medical treatment. It's possible he will continue to be cared for by the small group of German nuns who have looked after him during his papacy. As a pope has not retired for 600 years, there's no precedent for a papal pension plan, but Canon law requires each diocese to look after the welfare of retiring clerics. Rome will doubtless take good care of its Pope emeritus.
9. Georg Ganswein: Benedict XVI's personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Ganswein - the photogenic face seen in the background of a million photographs - will stay in this post. However, he will also keep up his role as head of the papal household for Benedict's successor. He will be the servant of two masters.
10. Infallibility: It's a widely held misconception the Pope is infallible in everything he says and does. In fact, the First Vatican Council of 1870 ruled a Pope's rulings are infallible only when they are made "ex-cathedra" - as part of a doctrinal statement about the Church. Benedict XVI never invoked this privilege (and in fact only one infallible statement has been made since 1870). When he resigns as Pope he will no longer be able to make ex cathedra statements. (BBC)
