I want to thank Ahmed Musa for being a wonderful professional. It takes a man to come out and do what he has done today. I commend him a lot. It will be a new Super Eagles with a new approach.”
This was Mikel’s remark shortly after Ahmed Musa surrendered the Super Eagles captain armband to the Chelsea star at a press briefing in Kaduna state.
“Mikel is my senior and a big brother. So, Mikel is the captain, not me,” Musa said.
However, the change in the team’s leadership comes barely 24 hours to the crucial 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Pharaohs of Egypt in Kaduna state.
But while some have showered accolades on Musa for his humility, others questioned his appointment in the first place.
For Coach Samson Siasia, the change marks the beginning of great things to come for the country’s football.
According to him, Musa will now assist Mikel in his new leadership role.
Siasia said: “Ahmed (Musa) is a great player and has captained the Super Eagles for a while. So, it takes a good man and a great professional to do what Ahmed Musa has done today, he has earned my respect for doing that.
